Why Topical Steroids are EVIL

I found out last night that there are seven classes of topical corticosteroids, 1 being the most potent and 7 being the least. The typical hydrocortisone that you could buy at the pharmacy is level 7. By the way, guys, Flonase is also a steroid drug… so just don’t use it. Why are topical steroids so bad and why should you avoid them?

BECAUSE I’M F*ING SUFFERING FROM WITHDRAWAL FROM USING THEM! And I don’t know when, if ever, I will heal from it. SO DON’T TRUST YOUR DOCTOR WITH THESE PRESCRIPTIONS. When you're suffering from withdrawal, they will just tell you to keep using more!

Ok, just had to rant. Back to what I was saying.

For my dyshydrotic eczema, I was prescribed Halobetasol propionate 0.05%. That is a class 1 steroid, “super high” potency. Maximum duration of use is 3 weeks, but I was never told that. Even if I had been told that, it never should have been prescribed for something that could have been healed by treating my body from a holistic standpoint.

Here are side effects, or rather, effects of using topical corticosteroids. I can tell you I've got at LEAST four of these now:

How my NMT (No Moisturizing Treatment) is going

On the last post, I mentioned finding NMT as a healing option. I have been half-assing the method:

  • I have not been strict with my 1L water intake, and boy did I pay for it (if that’s what it was!) I was so thirsty yesterday since I spent much of the day outside, so I drank my whole liter of water plus espresso plus watermelon juice. This morning I woke up with the nastiest itch on my hands and fingers. I went to town scratching, and now they are oozing and bleeding so I’m typing with gauze-wrapped hands.

  • I have been enjoying being in bed by 10 p.m. I am able to naturally wake up at 5 or 6 a.m., well rested, whereas before, I’d go to bed around 11 and not feel well rested even when waking up at 7 or 8 a.m. So that's been nice!

  • I wasn’t able to get in a full hour workout yesterday but I did 30 minutes and also sweat being outside at my permaculture design class in Austin, TX.

  • I took a quick shower last night. I really needed it, but think I do need to stick to every 3-4 days as recommended.

  • Still haven’t put any oil or butters on my body! Not even my face, and I have been wearing only the occasional mascara as makeup.
